For plans written as of 10/01/2013 with an effective date of 01/01/2014 or later health insurance for individuals can be thought of as 4 categories under MNsure (aka: ObamaCare / Affordable Care Act / etc).
1) Coverage that does NOT qualify under the Affordable Care Act as "Essential Coverage". You will pay a "penalty" for not carrying a qualified plan each year.
2) You may carry a qualified plan which does qualify under "Essential Coverage" from one of our many carriers and plans that is not a MNsure plan.
3) You may carry a MNsure Plan. The primary purpose for a MNsure plan is for low income persons to qualify for a premium subsidy from the government so as to encourage carrying coverage as opposed to not carrying any coverage. The subsidy may be available for those earning up to 400% of the poverty level.
4) Medicare eligible persons. (MNsure does not apply to Medicare eligible persons).
